How many se utiliza para preguntar sobre cantidades con sustantivos contables y how much pregunta sobre los incontables.

How many viene delante de los sustantivos en plural:

How many bottles of milk?
(¿Cuántas botellas de leche?)

How many books?
(¿Cuántos libros?)

How many people?
(¿Cuántas personas?)

How many weeks?
(¿Cuántas semanas?)

How much is followed by an uncountable noun:

How much milk?
